My favorite ad campaign growing up was De Beers' 1990s classic "A Diamond Is Forever." To my childhood self, the classical music, dancing silhouettes and glittering diamonds were the height of elegance. (Karl Jenkins's "Palladio" lives rent-free in my head.) I couldn't have named the copywriter Frances Gerety, who coined the phrase in 1947. But the ads sparked something in me, showed me that the right words combined with the right images could lead to an idea that really sticks, even almost 80 years on.
